Minifigure Mania (a Lego Game)

Minifigure Mania
(a Lego Game)
by
Brett Glidden
(age 14)

OBJECT: If you are Heroes: To get the Epic Hero to the winning point
If you are the Enemies: block all the Heroes’ starting points

PLAYERS: 2 players (one person is the Enemy minifigures, while one is the Heroes)

SETUP:
Flat blue pieces (for water. If you have water, be sure to have a bridge crossing it)
tall gray pieces (for walls)
smalls gray or brown pieces (for rocks)
Black square pieces
White square pieces

Board
 Both players take turns making the board so that the board is not to one person’s advantage. Make your own board using Legos of your collection. Make sure it is big. Depending on the size of your board, make 4 to 7 starting points on each side. The ones on one side are for the Enemies, while the others are for the Heroes.  Make a winning point on the opposite side of the Heroes’ starting point. Place a Lego jewel (or treasure) in a certain spot on the board with black Lego’s surrounding it and white Lego’s surrounding the black ones. You may need to stick the Jewel into another Lego brick to attach it to the board. Add black Lego’s and white Lego’s in strategic locations.
Here is a diagram. Each little square is a stud. This diagram is for a small board. Your board will probably be much bigger

Key
Purple= Enemy’s starting points
Red= Winning Point
Green= nothing on board
Pink=Edge of board
Gray= Wall
Brown= Rocks
Black= Black Lego’s
White= White Lego’s
Yellow= Bridge
Light Green= Rope
Light Blue= Water
Blue= Hero’s starting point
Dark Red= Jewel
Light Purple= Blockade Blocking the Winning Point

 - Jewel: The Jewel, when collected by a Hero minifigure, allows the Heroes to get the Epic Hero.
- Obstacles: The more of different types of obstacle (e.g. rocks, water, walls, etc.) the better your gameplay will be.
- Die: When you roll the die multiply the number by four and that is how far you move. You have a limit of movement of eight-teen so that you don’t go too far on one turn.  So if you roll a six, even though six times four is twenty-four, you only move eight-teen. If you have a huge board, you might want to get rid of this rule.

CHARACTERS:
20-40 minifigures (even number of Enemies and Heroes) Set aside your favorite minifigure as the Epic Hero

 Each Hero will either be common, uncommon, or rare(you choose which rarity it will be); light or dark; and collector, defender, or attacker. For example, I made the red ninja be a uncommon light attacker. Each minifigure has a special ability (e.g. ninjas can swing across ropes or lifeguard can swim in water).  So if you had the Lifeguard, he could cross the water at any spot instead of using the bridge which would be helpful if you had the bridge at one side like in the diagram above. The Ninja can also swing across the rope.  The Epic Hero is the only Hero that can destroy the barricade blocking the exit. The enemies have no types at all. Each obstacle should have one minifigure that can cross tithe Heroes start with three minifigures(they all have to be common ones), one a collector, one a defender, and one an attacker. If you need to, write down what each minifigure does to help remember. Divide the rest of the good minifigures into groups depending on their rarity(common, uncommon, rare) and taking the other Heroes apart into three pieces (heads, bodies, and legs). Put their items aside until you collect all their pieces. If some of their items fall off a lot, just keep them aside until the end of the game.

Place the three Heroes you picked on any of the Heroes’ starting points, and any of the three Enemies on any of the Enemies’ starting points.

 ENIEMIES: Whenever you destroy an Enemy, he drops a piece (head, body, or legs) of one of the Heroes that aren’t on the board yet. You choose what kind of rarity it drops.  When you have collected all three parts of a minifigure, you can now play with that minifigure. Place him on one of the Hero starting points. Enemies have no special abilities and they can go through both black and white pieces. You have to be at least three studs away from a Hero before you can attack him. When you destroy a Hero, put him back at any of the Hero starting points. When an Enemy is destroyed, put him back at one of the Enemy starting points. If there is no starting points available, you lose that minifigure. Whenever a new Hero is created and put into gameplay, a new enemy is added too.

Themes for Heroes
Light- Light minifigures can go across white Lego’s but not Black ones.
Dark- Dark Minifigures can go across black Lego’s but not White ones.

There should only be one rare collector Hero that can go through both black and white so that it can collect the jewel that unlocks the Epic Hero.

Types for the Heroes (collector, defender, attacker):
CollectorsCollectors are the only minifigures that can collect minifigure pieces dropped by the enemies or any other thing you may put on the board for them to get. They are also the only minifigures that can move backwards.
DefendersDefenders are immune to the attacks of Enemies. Enemies can still attack them, but Defenders do not go back to the starting point.
Attackers: Attackers are the only minifigures that can attack and destroy Enemies. You have to be at least 3 studs away from the Enemy before you can attack.

Rarity (uncommon, common, rare): Rarity decides how easy it is to get the minifigure. The only way to get the “Special Minifigure” is to get the jewel .  Common pieces should be dropped more often then uncommon, and uncommon more than rare.After three common pieces are dropped, one uncommon is then dropped, and when three uncommon are dropped, one rare is dropped. You can change this if like so that it is easier or harder to get rarer pieces.

GAMEPLAY
One player moves the Enemies, while one moves the Heroes.  The Heroes go first.

Roll the die. Multiply the number you roll by four and that is the number of studs that both the Enemies and Heroes move that turn.

 Movement - Move one of the minifigures forward or to the side. Only Collectors can move backwards, not any other minifigure. After you move the first minifigure, make sure he cannot do anything (attack or collect) before you move your next guy. Once you have moved all your guys, the Enemies get to move. The limit of minifigures the Heroes can have on the board at one time is ten. If you already have ten on the board and you collect another minifigure but you want him on the board, you can place him on when either (1)When  an Enemy destroy one of your guys you can replace him with the new minifigure or (2) one of your minifigures reaches the end you can replace him with the new one.
Continue with players taking turns rolling the die and moving their figures.

When one of the Heroes reach the end of the board, place him back at one of the starting points. If you have no starting points available, keep him at the edge of the board until one of the starting points is available. The Epic Hero is the only minifigure that can go on the winning point. When an Enemy reaches one of the Heroes’  starting points, he lands on it and cannot get removed from it. When that happens, place another Enemy  on the board.

WIN:
The Heroes win when you get the Epic Hero on the winning point.
The Enemies  win when they block up all of the starting points.

OPTIONS: You can add more to this game as you wish, to make it more exciting.  This game is very flexible and it can easily be adapted.

STRIKES QUEST (Chapter Five)

STRIKES QUEST
by
Brett Glidden
(age 15)

Chapter 5
Strike streaked through the forest hoping he wasn’t too late. As he came closer to the canyon, he heard cries and roars. Strike burst out of the forest to see many dragons fighting against the beast. It was snapping, trying to get the Lightning Dragons as they flew around its head distracting it as the other dragons attacked. The beast’s hide seemed to be made of metal. The dragons tried to wound it but it was just about impossible.

Glow roared as he and the other dragons raced over and attacked. Strike slashed at the beast’s legs but his claws just scraped against its hide and did nothing. He raced up to the heads and tried to inflict a wound there but it was useless. He realized the other dragons were having the same problem.
“Watch out!” called Speedy as the beast threw a dragon straight towards him. Strike dodged, but the thrown dragon crashed against the cliff’s edge, and because his wings were wounded, he fell to the bottom of the canyon. That gave Strike an idea. He raced over to Glow who was desperately trying to wound one of the heads.
“If we tear the beast’s wings, it won’t be able to fly and maybe we can somehow push it down the cliff.” said Strike breathlessly.
“Good idea. Golden Dragons, to me!” Glow commanded.
Glow quickly told the dragons Strike’s plan. They split into two groups and flew to the mighty wings. Even the wings were tough as they tried to split them. Finally, Glow chomped down on the wing and it split. The beast howled in pain as it crashed to the ground right next to the canyons edge. All the dragons grouped together and charged straight at the beast. The impact caused the beast to fall into the canyon. It screeched with pain and fury as it fell to its death. The dragons roared with triumph. Star came over to Strike and Glow. One of her wings was missing. “Well done, Strike. You saved the tribes,” she said. She turned to Glow. “Thanks for coming. Without your help we would have been destroyed.”
“We would never back away from dragons that needed help,” replied Glow. He called his dragons and together they flew off.

A few months had gone after the Battle with the Beast. Twig had recovered and was happily hunting again. He never went to the canyon again.  The tribes recovered but the Fire Tribe hadn’t returned. Star jumped onto a large rock and called a meeting. “It is time for Thorns to get his first mission,” she said. Before dragons could become warriors they had to have completed a mission first. “Thorns, your mission is to find the Fire Tribe and persuade them to come back. You leave tomorrow.” Thorns nodded his head in acknowledgement. “Meeting adjourned,” said Star as she went into her cave. Twig flew over to Strike. “What happened? I missed it,” said Twig curiously. “Star wants Thorns to bring back the Fire Tribe,” answered Strike. “Lets go hunting.” Together, they flew off to hunt in the opposite directions of the canyon. Claw watched them leave. “Almost everything has returned to normal since the attack. There is peace once more,” he said to himself.

STRIKES QUEST (Chapter Four)

STRIKES QUEST
by
Brett Glidden

 Chapter 4

Strike landed on the ground and looked around. This piece of land was huge. It seemed to stretch on and on. Strike realized that there wasn’t a tree for miles. He wondered how in the world could these dragons could have any protection without trees. Strike wandered around looking for the dragons. Then he spotted one climbing out of a huge gaping hole in the ground. Strike flew over to him. “Hey!” he called. The other dragon roared in surprise and tumbled back into the hole. “Where did you come from?” the dragon said as he climbed back up the whole.

“It’s a long story, but I need to see your leader.”

“Well come on then,” replied the other dragon as he led Strike down the tunnel. “By the way, my name is Speedy.”

When they reached the end of the tunnel, Strike stared in amazement. There was a huge cavern and other tunnels leading to it. Golden Dragons were everywhere. Some were eating while others were digging new tunnels. He heard from one of the tunnels noises from baby dragons “Who’s this?” asked a dragon close by. “Uh, I am not quite sure. He said he needed to see Glow,” said Speedy. Speedy led the way to a smaller cavern. “Glow a stranger wants to see you.” “Bring him in,” came a voice from the cavern. Strike slowly walked in and didn’t see anything. Then a dragon came out from behind a rock. “Why are you here?” asked Glow. Strike quickly explained his predicament. “I remember your leader,” said Glow after Strike had finished. “Of course she wasn’t leader then. She was just a hatchling and I was a trainee. I will help. On one condition. That you will never tell anybody about our camp.”

"I will tell no one,” promised Strike.

A few days later, Strike and ten Golden Dragons, including Speedy and Glow arrived at the mass of land Strike lived on. As they made their way through the territory of the Fire Tribe, Strike knew something was terribly wrong. There were broken trees every where and a nasty stench filled the air. Strike made a detour to the Fire Tribe’s camp to see what happened. When they arrived, he gasped. The camp was utterly destroyed. There was not a dragon in sight. “What happened?” Strike wondered aloud. “Looks like the beast got here before us. Let’s go in case he’s still here,” said Glow. “I have to see if my tribe is alright,” replied Strike as he shot off. He streaked through the forest and arrived at his camp. He was relieved to see two dragons guarding the camp, but realized that they were very unnerved and scared. The guards jumped when they saw him. “Strike you’re back!” exclaimed one.

“Yes,” replied Strike. “Good to see you again Claw and Silver. I also brought the Golden Dragons with me. What happened to the Fire Tribe?”

Claw looked as if he were afraid  the beast might come out at any moment. “It was terrible. Yesterday we suddenly heard screeching and wailing. We all wondered what was happening. Star was just about to send a patrol to see what the problem was when it stopped. Soon the remains of the Fire Tribe came and said that a hideous monster attacked their camp and destroyed most of them. They then flew off.”

“That’s terrible. How’s Twig.”

“No better, no worse, I’m afraid”

“I need to see Star.”

“You can’t. She isn’t here. After the Fire Tribe came, she got the other tribes together to attack the beast. She and most of the tribe left a little while ago.”

“What!!!” exclaimed Strike. He turned to the Golden Dragons. “ We need to leave right away.”

“Right,” replied Glow. “Lead the way.”

Claw watched gravely as Strike and the Golden Dragons flew away towards the canyon.

Strikes Quest (Chapter Three)

STRIKES QUEST
by
Brett Glidden
(age 15)

Chapter 3

Strike burst into the camp and ran into Star’s cave. He told everything to her.

“This is much more dangerous than I thought!” she exclaimed.

 “What are we to do?” asked Strike.

“There is only one thing to do. Go across the ocean and ask the Golden dragons for help.”

"The Golden dragons?”

“Yes. At first they were thought to be just a myth. But when I was almost a trainee, one came from across the ocean. They are faster, braver, stronger, and kinder than any other dragon tribe. They will help us, that I know.”
“How do I get across the ocean and find them.”

“I do not know how to find them, but to get across the ocean is simple, but dangerous. There are many islands that stretch across the ocean. At night, just land on one, and the next day continue your journey. However, no one knows what is on the islands. There could be nothing. But there could be great danger.”

“When should I leave?”

“Tomorrow morning. I will try to gather the other tribes to help if you fail. I give you only one month, for we cannot let this beast roam for long.”

The next day Strike thought about his journey while gobbling down some prey.  The shortest way to the ocean was to go through the Fire Tribe’s territory and after that, the Water Tribe. Strike gulped. The Fire Tribe was very protective of their land and often attacked other dragons a soon as they saw them. Strike would have to go through as quickly as he could. The Water dragons were not a problem at all. The section of their land he was going through was a swamp and they barely checked on it. He would be fine going through there. Strike finished his prey and set off. He soon reached the Fire Tribe territory. Strike landed on a tree and looked around. No dragons in sight. Strike streaked off, flying as quickly as he could. He flew through without any trouble. He had no trouble with the Water Tribe either. Soon, all he could see was water.

Strike flew for many days, resting on islands then starting again the next morning. Still, no sign of land besides islands. The day went by and he stopped at the next island to rest. He soon caught a couple turkeys and was eating when he suddenly felt an immense pain from his head and everything went black. He woke up and tried to move, but realized he couldn’t. He was strapped to a fallen tree by vines. Suddenly, monkeys appeared from the trees screeching. Many of them had coconuts in their paws. “He’s awake! He’s awake!” they cried. The leaves from one of the trees parted and a monkey, bigger than all the others, hopped down from the tree. He walked over to Strike and began inspecting him. He had a sharp rock and suddenly slashed Strike. Strike roared in pain. The monkeys started screeching and jumping. Strike tested the vines and realized that the vines weren’t that strong. He broke the vines and shot upwards then dived down to attack. Then he realized that he had made a big mistake. The monkeys threw their coconuts at Strike. Strike was hit by a dozen at once. Roaring with pain, he shot back upwards out of the trees and headed towards the ocean. He wanted to get as far away as he could. He flew on and on and finally reached the end of the island and kept on flying. He would have to find another island to rest on. Strike found another one and landed, cautiously looking around. When he was sure that he was safe, he curled up and went to sleep.

The next morning he set off again, traveling for many hours before landing on an island to catch his breath and eat. He caught a goat and finished his meal. Then he heard a roar and a tiger burst out of the bushes and leaped on top of him. Strike snarled in fury as he rolled on his back, squashing the tiger. Then a second tiger came out from the trees. Strike stared at the two, not daring to make any sudden movements. The tigers looked at him hesitantly. They both leaped on him at once. Strike slashed and bit as he struggled to get free. Finally, one of the tigers gave up and fled. Soon, the other fled also. Strike licked his wounds then flew off again. He flew on and on. Then in the distance, he saw something. It got bigger and bigger. He realized with a jolt that it was a massive piece of land. He heard a screech and turned to see a golden dragon diving into the water. He came back up with a huge fish in his mouth and headed for land. Strike flew as fast as he could. He had found the Golden dragons!

Strikes Quest, Chapter Two

STRIKES QUEST
by
Brett Glidden
(age 15)

 Chapter 2

Twig burst into the camp with wild eyes. He stopped in front of the prey pile and picked an eagle. He gulped it down in a few minutes. “Catch any prey?” asked Claw. Twig just stared at him. “Twig?” questioned Claw. “Twig, what happened? Herb! Herb!” Herb came running up to Twig.
“What happened?” he asked as he looked all over Twig for wounds.
“Don’t know. He just returned from hunting at the canyon.”
“Well, what ever happened scared him out of his wits. Nobody should go there until we figure out what happened.”
“I’ll go tell Star.” Claw hurried off to Star’s cave. Star came out and walked over to Twig. “Twig, Twig. What happened? Are you alright?” Twig didn’t answer. He just stared. At that moment, Strike flew over. “Twig! Are you alright? Speak to me. Twig!” wailed Strike. By now, the other dragons came over to see what was the matter. “Listen, everyone.” called Star. “Something happened to Twig at the canyon. No one is to go there, understand. If Twig doesn’t tell us in a couple days, I will lead a patrol to see what the problem is.”
  A couple days went by and still Twig was not well. He just kept staring and didn’t speak a word. Strike was with him all the spare moments he had. Strike was with Twig when Star came up to him. “ Strike, I am leading a patrol to the canyon. I want you to come with me.” At that Twig began to screech. “Don’t go! You’ll be killed. Don’t go!” Twig began to shake uncontrollably.
“He’ll kill you all! You’ll all die!”
“Who’ll kill us?” asked Star.
“He will! A nightmare of nightmares. He could destroy all the tribes in minutes. Don’t go. I beg you!”
“All right. All right. We won’t.”
“That seemed to calm Twig down. Strike and Star left him. Strike turned to Star, ”So we aren’t going to investigate what this monster is?”
“Yes, we are,” replied Star. “However, it seems too dangerous to lead a group of dragons there. I will only have one dragon go. That way, there is a better chance of surviving. You are the fastest, Strike. Therefore, I ask you to go.”
“It will be an honor.”
“Now don’t take any unnecessary risks. I don’t want you to die. By what Twig said, it sounds like it is a very dangerous creature.”
“I’ll be very careful. When should I leave?”
“Now. The sooner we know what this is , the better.”
Strike flew off straight towards the canyon. When he reached the canyon, he cautiously crept along the edge of the canyon. Then ,on the other side of the canyon, he saw huge claw marks on the ground. He became even more cautious and peered over the canyon edge. He saw even more claw marks on rocks jutting out in the canyon. He realized that the monster lived in the canyon. Strike wondered how to find out what the creature was. He definitely wasn’t going in the canyon. Then he got an idea. Strike grabbed a big rock with all four feet and started yowling and roaring. He then dropped the rock. It fell in the canyon, crashing against the side of the canyon. All of a sudden, Strike heard a deafening roar and a humongous beast came flying out of the canyon with lightning speed. Strike was terrified . This monster was taller than many trees stacked on top of each other and longer than twenty dragons.  Strike shot off and headed for the forest, then realized he would lead the monster to his home if he went back. Strike turned around and came face to face with one of the monster’s heads. He turned around to see another head. He was trapped. After trying to escape for a few moments, he realized he would have to try something daring. He flew right up to one of the faces and just stayed there. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw another head ready to strike. Strike darted up just as the head struck, just missing him. Strike dove into the canyon with another idea. He headed straight towards a rock jutting of the cliff wall into the canyon. The beast was close behind him. Strike was just about to hit the rock when he dove under it. The beast, because of its size, couldn’t move in time. It flew right into the rock and shattered it. The beast roared in pain. Strike was already out of the canyon and was taking the long way home. He had a lot to tell the tribe

Strikes Quest

Strikes Quest
by

(age 14)

                                     Chapter 1

Twig walked silently along the edge of the forest with four other green dragons. All were alert. Suddenly, a roar came from the forest. Six blue dragons burst from the woods and attacked Twig and his startled friends. Roaring with fury, the green dragons leaped into battle. Twig found himself face to face with a dragon twice his size. He realized with dread that this was a battle experienced warrior, not a trainee like Twig was. Before he could flee, the dragon leaped on top of him and began to claw his side. Now filled with fury, Twig lashed out and caught the side of the dragons face. He roared with pain and staggered back. Twig took this opportunity and fled. He looked around and saw a younger dragon. Twig sneaked behind him and leaped. The young dragon yowled with alarm and tried to flee. Twig held on and began to sink his teeth into the dragon. But then he remembered what his trainer, Claw, told had him. "Do not kill unless you have to." Twig released his prisoner. The dragon shot off across the meadow that bordered the forest and ran for his camp. Twig looked around for another opponent but couldn’t find any. The rest had fled. The Forest dragons were victorious. They roared in triumph and made their way back to camp.

    Once at camp, the captain of the patrol reported back to their leader, Star. She was called that because of a dark green star on her forehead. Twig walked over to the healer, a dragon named Herb. “What happened to you?” asked Herb.

  “We were attacked by the Water dragons.” explained Twig. “Six of them. But we won!”

  “How many from our tribe were there?”

“Five.”

“Only five! Wow! That’s the first time since Star was born that Forest Dragons won a fight when they were outnumbered. We are growing stronger, you know. Ever since the Great Fire that destroyed our forest we have been weak. But we are strong again. We have many more warriors than ever, seven trainees, three newborns, and five eggs in the nest. But enough talk. Let me see your wound.” Herb put some medicine on Twig’s wounds and told him not to leave camp until it was healed. Herb sent him away and began to patch the others' wounds. Twig went out of the medicine den and sat down. Life was going to be boring for a few days. He looked around and saw a newborn talking to an elder, Silent. “What is the difference between each tribe besides the colors?” asked the newborn.

“That is a very good question.” said Silent. “Each tribe likes and does something better than the other tribes. Us, the Forest Tribe, blend into our surroundings and love the forest. The Fire Tribe can breath fire and are very smart. They love heat. The Water Tribe loves water and can swim better than any other tribe. The Lightning Tribe love flying. They are the fastest of all. The Ice Tribe breath ice and love the cold. The Rock Tribe are immensely strong and love climbing. The Dark Tribe loves the dark and are very sneaky and crafty.” Silent began to further explain each tribe, but Twig wasn’t listening. He headed for somewhere quiet to sleep.

After a few days, his wounds were healed. Twig was eager to get out of camp. But just as he was leaving, Star called a meeting. “It is time for Strike to become a warrior.” she said. “Strike, come here.” Strike flew over and landed next to her. "Strike, it is with great pleasure I name a warrior of the Forest Tribe.” The Forest dragons yowled their congratulations. Twig walked over to Strike. “Congratulations, Strike. You deserve it. Maybe you’ll even become a leader” Twig said. “Thanks, little brother.” replied Strike. He was about to say more but other dragons came to congratulate him.

“Hey, Twig.” Claw called.

“What?” replied Twig.

 “ I know your dying to get out of camp, so how about you go hunting. We are getting low on food.”

“Sure. Where should I hunt?”

“How about the canyon. No one has hunted there in a long time. There should be a lot of prey there.”

But that’s not part of our territory!” exclaimed Twig.

“It’s nobody's territory. You’ll be fine.”

“OK” said Twig as he flew off. When he reached the canyon he began to look around for prey. Soon he heard a vulture screeching.  Twig slowly and silently walked closer and closer to where he heard the screech. Then he spotted a vulture. Then another. Then another. There were at least twenty! If he could only get a couple that would be enough. Twig waited until the right moment, then leaped into the group of vultures swiping in every direction. The vultures cried in terror and and tried to escape. Twig got one then leaped onto another. He got two more before they escaped. He felt very pleased with himself. Then he heard a cry of another dragon in distress. Twig hesitated, then flew toward the sound. He heard more cries, then a deafening roar. Twig flew faster. What he saw next made his heart stop beating.

At the edge of the other side of the canyon was the biggest creature he ever saw. A huge dragon with three heads on long necks was snapping at three dragons from the Lightning Tribe. The dragons were trying the best to avoid the monstrous beast that was trying to destroy them. Twig was frozen to the spot. He couldn’t help even if he wanted to. Then, in a split of a second, all three heads snapped and caught the dragons. The beast flew into the canyon with them. Twig shot away, leaving the vultures, and headed straight for camp. He was too terrified to speak or think. All he knew was that a monstrous beast was living in the canyon and was a threat to all dragons.
